Regulation vs Innovation: Artificial Intelligence and the New Model of European Development
Institute for Western Affairs in Poznan, November 6th 2024 - 9:00
One of the main challenges facing the European Union is the global competition for dominance in the field of artificial intelligence. This takes place in the context of destabilization of the international order and amid the growing importance of risky economic dependencies. Despite technological lag compared to the USA or China, the European Union is actively engaged in shaping the legal framework for the development of artificial intelligence. The European AI Act, as the world’s first comprehensive, legally binding set of regulations concerning this technology, aims to strike a balance between risk mitigation and building a friendly environment for innovation.
During our conference, we will consider whether Europe will be able to develop its own model of development based on safe, transparent, and human-centered AI, while simultaneously strengthening its technological sovereignty. We will also discuss strategies to maintain high ethical standards, data protection, and intellectual property rights, while avoiding overregulation that could hamper the business development. Additionally, we want to explore the possibilities of collaboration among European states, especially Poland and Germany, comparing their diverse concepts of AI development.
§ Can AI become the driving force behind a new European development model?
§ Will the EU’s AI Act bring about another "Brussels effect" and set international standards for AI regulation?
§ What opportunities, challenges, and risks does AI development create in the political, social, economic, and scientific spheres?
§ What are the characteristics of the Polish and German models for AI development?
§ How can European countries collaborate to ensure AI technology that is both safe and competitive?
Join us, along with top European experts, to explore answers to these key questions and discover the potential of artificial intelligence for the future of Europe.
