The government of the Federal Republic of Germany is starting its third term of office under the leadership of Angela Merkel. The Chancellor is serving her second term with a cabinet selected by the Grand Coalition. While her own Christian Democratic Union ran its election campaign on the slogan of “Carry on as before” (Weiter so), the opposition Social Democrats offered scores of reform proposals to its voting public. Surprisingly, Social Democratic postulates have easily been winning the backing of the senior coalition partner.
