The restructuring and modernisation of the Polish economy which has been giong on since 1989 has increased Poland's interest in large foreign investments which would speed up this process. German investments are of great importance because of Germany's financial potential and the high technological level of German investments. The traty on good neighbourliness and friendship concluded by Poland and Germany on June 17, 1991 also laid stress on the development of economic co-operation. The extensive publication on German investments in Poland edited by Kalka presents not only the results of research into the economic and legal aspect of German investments in the voivodships of Gorzów, Jelenia Góra, Poznań, Szczecin and Zielona Góra. What is new is that it also presents the opinions of inhabitants in these territories and the links between investments and natural environment. The research was conducted at the request of the voivode of Poznań as part of a programme carried out by the Institute for Western Affairs in 1994-1997; it was financed by the Committee for Scientific Research. In addition to its scholarly value, the book will be useful for persons and institutions whose job is to recommend Poland's western borderland as a good place for foreign investments. Since it contains many observations of a universal character, it can be used in similar research in other regions.
