The publication presents the papers which were read at an international conference organised at the Institute for Western Affair in Poznań from December 12th to 14th, 1993; this was the first time that Polish researchers as well as researchers from beyond our western and eastern borders (Germans, Russians, Ukrainians) had analysed the subject of compulsory migrations. This explains the diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches which for a long time yet will conceal different appraisals of deportations, expulsions and population transfers. The book supplies many data and a great deal of information on historical, legal and sociological facts. The reader will find it difficult to be unmoved by the deeply emotional moral and existential arguments permeating these polemical studies
