Without a doubt, today’s Federal Republic of Germany is a well-established global player. This particular point is explored by the articlesthat open the 1/2021 edition of Przegląd Zachodni. Further chronologically-arranged articles revisit the Nazi occupation of Poland, the migrations that followed in the wake of World War II, including the homecoming of German prisoners of war from the USSR, and the decades of subsequent dilemmas and crises in the strained neighborly relations between Poland and Germany during the Cold War.
Next to the assessments and discussions provided by the authors, the volume points to shadows of the past that to this day influence people’s views and define the brand of politics they pursue. And yet, both the repressions against travelers on the Polish-East German border in the early days of the Solidarity movement, and the painstakingly built dialogue in the realm of culture, are the experience shared by the same generation of Poles and Germans. Global dynamics and lessons learned from the past have the capacity to trigger profound changes even within the lifetime of a single generation.
