On this year’s 30th anniversary of the German reunification, we have gained sufficient temporal distance to assess the plethora of research projects and papers on Poland’s western neighbor that have since been produced. First and foremost, the Federal Republic of Germany has become a key member state of the European Union. Proof of Germany’s post-reunification success lies in the soft power it has gained by forging international relations and building on its political traditions, its art of politics, its culture and its ability to engage in multifaceted dialogue. Many of the developments that unfolded during the three decades of the reunified Germany have transcended the mental divisions into the Ossis and the Wessis. Civic awareness, national identity and national memory take considerably longer to evolve and mature than the political breakthroughs of 1989-1990, although even then time did not stop. The new impulses brought about a revamping of culture and society amidst an inter-generational change of guard, a developmental leap and migratory pressures that accelerated demographic shifts. Three decades on, this edition’s articles take the perspective of a very different Germany and tackle the “old” issues with reference to new distinctive developments such as the emergence of new political groups and the steady dismantling of Germany’s old political scene known since the times of Adenauer and Erhard.
